도시 기능에 필수적인 인프라1)가 도시의 지속가능성(회복력)에 어떻게 기여할 수 있을까? 어떻게 하면 건축 행위가 도시에 보다 적합한 인프라의 형태로 전환될 수 있을까? 엔지니어링 분야의 기술자들은 도시의 지속 가능성을 위해 종종 선도적 역할을 해왔지만 이 과정에서 건축은 어떠한 역할을 할 수 있는 것인가? 2021년 서울도시건축비엔날레의 주제전은 ‘건축 x 인프라’ 라는 부제로 건축과 공학기술 이 두 영역의 융합과 시너지 효과에 대해 고민하고자 한다. 이 동반자적 관점은 21세기를 맞은 도시에 새로운 가능성을 제공하며 노후화되고 취약해진 도시를 재생하는데 유용한 도구가 될 것이다. 이 과정에서 공간을 디자인하고 프로그램을 구성하는 건축가의 노하우는 인프라가 환경에 보다 적은 영향을 끼치고 더욱 개방적이고 광범위한 용도로 도시에 활용되도록 할 수 있다. 이는 현대 도시에 적응하는 다기능적이고 진화한 새로운 형태의 인프라이다. 2021 서울도시건축비엔날레의 주제전은 지금까지 명백히 분리 되어온 이 두 영역의 융합을 모색함으로써 도시의 회복력, 지속가능성, 심미성에 대해 새로운 도전을 하고자 한다.

* 인프라 : 도시가 작동하는데 필요한 기반시설 (상하수도, 가스, 통신,도로, 공항, 학교,하천 등 생활, 환경, 생산, 경제활동 등을 가능하게 하는 요소들을 통칭한다)


Thematic Exhibition
While they are essential to the functioning of metropolises, are the infrastructures the missing link to resilience? How can architecture transform infrastructure into an adaptable resource for the city? While leaders in the fields of engineering have often been pioneers in urban resilience, what role can architects play in these processes? Entitled “Architecture X Infrastructure”, the thematic exhibition of the Seoul Biennale 2021 intends to express the potential synergies between architecture and engineering. This unprecedented partnership opens up perspectives and feeds the possible directions of 21st century urbanization. It considers the management of obsolescence and vulnerability as an exciting opportunity for the regeneration. In this process, architects can play a key role, through their know-how in programming and spatial design, to transform infrastructure that is functional and silent to its environment into architecture that offers a far wider range of uses, is lively and open to the city: new forms of infrastructure that are evolving, adaptable and multifunctional. By questioning the apparent separation of two often distinct territories, the exhibition argues for merger them as a way to produce a resilient, responsible, aesthetic and sustainable response to today’s urban challenges.

도시전
도시전에서는 보다 지속가능한 세상을 만드는데 핵심공간인 도시와 도시에서 건축이 할 수 있는 중요한 역할에 대해 탐험한다. 안정화, 표준화된 도시와 달리 회복력(Resilient)이 있는 도시는 유연하고 적응력이 뛰어나며 높은 상호 작용을 가진다 . 이 전시회는 ‘크로스로드’ 로 불리는 큰 주제와 다섯개의 소주제를 통해 도시의 환경을 개선하기 위한 혁신적이고 독창적인 비전을 제시한다. 소주제 별로 진행되는 각 전시는 건축, 디자인, 도시 분야의 구체적인 계획과 프로젝트를 통해 세계 도시들을 탐험할 수 있으며 도시와 자연, 기존의 것과 새로운 것, 지상과 지하, 인간과 비인간 사이의 연결고리를 강화함으로써 도시의 새로운 미래를 상상해본다. 새로운 세대의 건축가, 도시계획자들은 환경과 관련된 복잡한 문제에 대한 혁신적 해결 방안과 자원, 보건, 안전, 주택, 서비스 등 인프라에 대한 새로운 접근 방법을 찾아야만 한다. 전시된 프로젝트를 통해 확신과 상상력, 현실과 이상 사이에서 도시의 잠재력을 찾아내고 우리에게 영감을 주고 개방적인 생각을 가능하게 하는 놀라운 전략들을 만날 수 있을 것이다.


Cities Exhibition
The Cities exhibition affirms the place of cities as key spaces for creating the prospects of a more sustainable world, and explores the critical role that architecture is able to play. Unlike the stable, secure, optimized and standardized city, the resilient city is flexible and adaptable. It minimizes dependency and increases the interconnections. The exhibition takes an innovative look at and offers an original vision of the city’s production, oriented towards the improvement of our built environments, through the prism of five thematic figures, or “Crossroads”. With a thematic progression through each “Crossroad”, the exhibition offers an exploration of the world’s cities through projects developing specific initiatives in the field of architecture, design and urban planning. Projects that contribute to re-imagining the future of our cities, by tightening the links between city and nature, old and new, above and below, human and non-human. The new generation of architects and urban planners is challenged to find innovative solutions to complex issues, related to the environment, access to resources, health and safety requirements, access to housing, services or infrastructure. The exposed projects combine conviction and imagination, realism and idealism, and allow to explore the potential of specific sites, expressed through strategic, open and inspiring scenarios.
