지금의 서울은 옛 모습이 어땠는지 알 수 없을 정도로 성장하여 고층의 빌딩과 복합적인 문화가 섞여 있는 도시가 되었다. 그러나 이런 성장의 중심인 을지로 가에는 아직도 한국전쟁 이후 산업활동이 활발했던 구역이 존재한다. 지금도 여전히 한국의 산업 활동에 필요한 것들이 이곳을 지키고 있다. 건설 부품, 공장. 제품 제작의 부자재. 먹거리, 의류 등등 다양한 산업 전반에 걸쳐 있다. 상대적으로 다른 지역보다 재밌는 풍경을 볼 수 있는 을지로에 독특한 정체성을 보이는 힙스터들이 하나둘 자리를 잡고 재밌는 공간을 만들어 가고 있다.
 

N/A도 그러한 재밌는 공간 중 하나로 만들기 위해 을지로에 산업활동이 활발하던 70년대에 탄생한 건물에 자리를 잡았다. N/A는 두 명의 포토그래퍼가 오픈한 컨템포러리 갤러리이자 그들의 작업실이다. 그들의 주문대로 건물의 기틀을 보존하고, 필요에 의해 개선되어야 하는 곳만 손을 보며 공간 전체의 흐름을 만들어나갔다. 오래된 타일과 바닥을 보존하고 낡은 창틀을 제거하고 반듯한 금속으로 정돈을 하였다. 마치 유적지를 보존하며 다듬어 가던 공간은 과거와 현재가 공존하는 그들만의 공간으로 재탄생 되었다.

Today, Seoul has developed into a city interlaced with complex cultures and high-rise buildings, almost to the point where it’s hard to imagine its past. Yet in some parts of Euljiro, a region that has been central to the city’s development, there remains evidences of Seoul’s post-war industrialization. Even now, the neighborhood has all the things essential to the industrial activities in Korea: construction materials, factories, subsidiary materials, food, and fabric. In Euljiro, where the cityscape is more eclectic than other areas, unique individuals began settling one by one, opening fun and independent spaces. 


N/A, a contemporary gallery and atelier founded by two photographers, is one of those spaces, located in a building built in the 1970s when Euljiro’s industrialization was in full fledge. Studio Unravel got to produce the entire interior mood of the space, and, following the photographers’ requests, we preserved the building structure while touching up minimal areas that needed repair. We kept the old tiles and the flooring and removed the old window frames and replaced them with crisp metal ones. Like restoring a historical site, we preserved the heart of the space while refining the details until it was reborn into a unique atelier where the past and the present coexist.
